Baby Travel Essentials: Your Ultimate Guide to Packing for Baby’s Trip

If you are flying with your infant for the first time, flying can be a daunting experience. Especially if you’re flying without help. Traveling with a baby doesn’t have to be scary if you plan ahead. You can take flying as an infant on your own, or fly together with the family and make it easier for everyone. Check out our checklist of what to pack for infant travel necessities when travelling abroad with baby.

When is it safe to travel with a baby?

Different airlines have different policies. Some require an infant to be at least two days old, others at least 2 weeks old. Doctors recommend you wait until your baby’s immune system is more developed before flying, usually at least one month, though most recommend anywhere between 3-6 months.

So make sure you do your research and follow the airline’s requirements.

Documents in Traveling with a Baby:

The following documents must be carried for flying with a baby:

  • Passport (including any applicable visas)
  • Vaccination Records
  • Medical records, including any chronic conditions and medication list
  • Birth certificate of the infant
  • Child’s ID card or equivalent document (e.g., national identity number in the case of China) if used as proof of citizenship/nationality under local law for children who are not traveling with both parents. If only one parent is present to confer nationality at the time of travel, that parent must provide documentary evidence proving they are the child’s other parent, such as copies of original documents showing legal marriage – these may be required by certain countries before entry will be permitted; this documentation also should be carried on the adult traveler
  • A letter of authorization, in English or the destination language, with a copy for each carrier which includes: an explicit statement authorizing travel by air with the child and designating who is to act as escort during the flight.
  • If not flying together on the same flight (i.e., if the infant flying alone), then the letter of authorization for flying alone must also be carried.
  • If the infant is flying as an unaccompanied minor, then the following documents are required:
  • A copy of the parents’ proof of identity (i.e., passports) with photocopies or a photo ID/passport card plus copies in original; and
  • A notarized letter of consent from parents authorizing travel and designating who is to act as escort during the flight.
  • If flying together on the same flight, then a copy of one parent’s passport plus a photocopy or photo ID/passport card of the other parent may be carried in lieu of full documentation if both parents have all the following: a copy of each other’s proof of identity, photocopies or photo ID/passport cards plus copies in original.
  • When traveling it is also a must to bring your travel insurance.

Avoid flying with a baby if he/she is less than six months old, or has any underlying health conditions that could be aggravated by flying such as allergies to milk protein, severe heart disease, etc.

You may also want to consider flying during nap times so no passengers will complain of noise disturbance, and you can keep the cabin clean at all times. Depending on what type of flight it is (domestic vs international), there are different requirements for necessary items – make sure you know what they are before packing!

What to pack when traveling with baby: Baby Travel Essentials

The following are the must have items for traveling with baby:

Bottled Milk

When flying internationally with a baby, you have to declare the receipt of any food products (including breast milk) at customs. So if you’re not flying home within 24 hours from when your flight leaves, it’s important that you get an exemption for what you can bring back into the country as well. It’s really easy and takes just minutes online before heading off on your trip!

Bottled milk is considered a food product, so it has to be declared at customs. If you’re flying home from your trip within 24 hours, then you can bring back up to $100 worth of foods as long as they’re not canned and are sealed or packaged without any indication that the contents are alive (e.g., eggs in cardboard containers). Your baby may drink this milk if no other is available or for medical reasons.

Bottles must also have labels that show what the manufacturer says about feeding babies with breast milk like “breast”. They don’t need to include warnings against giving regular cow’s milk but should say something like: “suitable for use by infants who cannot tolerate whole cows’ milk because of lactose intolerance or allergy to cow’s milk protein and who have not yet reached two years of age.”

Diapers that are both absorbent and cost-effective

You must also bring diapers for your baby. Disposable diapers are convenient and easy to use, but they’re not always the best choice when flying with a baby or packing light – you might find yourself running out of them before your trip is over!

Reusable cloth diapers can be more cost-effective in this situation since you only have to buy one pack upfront (about $35-$50) which will last about two years. You just need enough clothes for both parents and then some extra onesies so that every time you change your child’s diaper, there’s an outfit waiting on him or her – useful if traveling during nap times while other passengers may not want any disturbance from noise as well as being able to keep the cabin clean at all times.

Blankets that are easy to carry

Another necessary item for flying with a baby blanket. When flying, you might need to cover your child if they’re just born or have an ongoing medical condition that could be aggravated by the cabin environment (e.g., allergies).

Blankets are also handy during the flight when it becomes cold – don’t forget to pack one in your carry-on bag!

Extra Clothes

It’s also necessary to have plenty of clothes for day-to-day necessities and then extras in case you get stuck on the ground due to flight cancellations you must also know how to pack baby clothes for travel just in case you wanted to have a good packing of your necessities.

The kind of clothes you can bring on a flight depends on the airline. Generally speaking, you should avoid wearing any clothing with metal zippers or buttons as well as cotton wear that might shrink and could emit sparks if in proximity to an airplane engine.

Most airlines allow adults flying with infants to bring one carry-on bag plus either one checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kg) or two checked bags totaling no more than 100 pounds (45 kg). You’ll also need some kind of baby carrier for your hands-free needs like carrying around your luggage so this is worth investing in too!

Reusable Wet Bags

Reusable wet bags are also necessary for flying with a baby. Wet bags are waterproof and can be used to contain dirty clothes as well as storing diapers or keeping them clean when not in use.

It would be good also if the bag is foldable and has handles, so you can easily carry it around or fold and store.

Cream for Baby Rashes

If flying with a baby, you might need to bring cream for baby rashes. You can either buy it at the airport or pack some from home as long as it is sealed and doesn’t contain any other food items like eggs that are not allowed on flights. You can place these creams in your carry-on bag.

Travel Stroller

The travel stroller is also necessary for flying with a baby. You can use this to check in the stroller and then place it under the seat or store when not using it.

You’ll want to carry-on your stroller, but don’t put anything heavy on top of it like suitcases as these may damage the fabric frame! The best way is to buy one that folds up easily, so you have more options about where you’ll be able to keep it while flying with a baby.

Extra Baby Feeding Bottles

You should also pack some extra baby feeding bottles in case you run out of them or if your child needs a different type for flying.

When carrying bottles , make sure they’re labeled with your child’s name – this will help in case the bottle falls out of their coat or bag.

You should also pack some bottles before flying and keep them sealed until you need it as airlines do not allow baby feeding bottles to be carried on board!

Pacifier

You might also want to pack an extra pacifier in case you run out of them or if your child needs a different type for flying.

When flying with babies, it’s best to have the same brand and model so that they can be used interchangeably in case one gets lost on the flight – this will make life much easier!

Favorite Stuffed toys

You can also bring some of your child’s favorite stuffed toys as these help provide comfort to children flying with a baby.

If the toy is larger than 16-inches (41 cm), you’ll need to pack it in checked baggage – but be sure to double-check before doing this!

And don’t forget, on flights lasting more than eight hours, you’ll need to provide your child with an age-appropriate toy and some activity materials for their flying journey.

Travel Car Seat

Another item to pack is a travel car seat. If flying with another adult, they’ll have to hold the baby during take-off and landing – but it’s best for them not to be holding your infant in their lap at all times as this may cause injury or discomfort from pressure on the thighs.

It would also be wise if you buy an extra seatbelt extender that will make life easier when flying with babies who might want more freedom of movement!

Wipes and Powder

It would also be a good idea to pack some wipes and powder for baby rashes. You can place these in your carry-on bag to keep them sealed.

Another essential item includes the cream that will help you soothe any bumps or bruises during flying with babies!

This is not necessary, but it’s worth investing in if all else fails – usually creams work better than any food items like oatmeal or cornstarch as they contain more ingredients designed specifically for relieving baby bumps and diaper rash.

It would also be a good idea to pack some baby soap in case you run out of it or if your child needs a different type for flying.

Universal Travel Adapter

You should have travel adapters available when flying with babies as electricity differs throughout the world and can cause problems with electronics, including monitors on cribs that may not work properly.

Carrying an adapter is always best – this way, there’ll never be any issues!

When purchasing a universal travel adapter, consider the iBlockCube Nimble, Agile and Bravado Booster Universal Adapter Series. They have been made especially for you whether you’re searching to go overseas or across the state. This product is lightweight, so it’s perfect if you’re traveling long distances on a tight budget with limited luggage space but still want all of your electronics charged up when needed most.

The built-in 8A fuse will automatically shut off as soon as the temperature rises too high which means that any item plugged into this adapter can be protected from overheating at any time! The Dual Port USB Charger 5V/3.5A Max allows two devices to charge simultaneously while also providing protection against overcharging and overheating safeties making sure none of those expensive resources are wasted in the process.

Tablet or Mobile Phone

You should also pack a tablet or mobile phone for flying with babies. This will allow you to distract your child during take-off and landing times, which can be very difficult if they do not want to sit in their chair without moving around!

Make sure also that you have installed different baby apps for flying with babies that will keep your child happy and from getting bored.

Remember to also have a charger for the tablet or mobile phone in case you run out of power on your device!

First Aid Kit for Emergency

It would also be wise to pack a first aid kit for emergencies when flying with babies.

The extra-large zippered compartments can hold anything from band-aids, tweezers, antibiotic cream and so much more! It has been made especially easy when traveling with an infant because the large Velcro closure will make sure everything stays in place.

If your child or any of you is taking medication , it’s also a good idea to have that on hand for flying with babies in case of emergencies.

Traveling with a baby: Tips

Before flying instead of asking for a seat on the plane, request an empty one next to you! If there are any seats available that can accommodate your needs, it will be much easier than being seated in between someone who is sleeping and another person with their headphones blasting. You’ll also get more space if they’re sitting by themselves or have kids nearby, so everyone can enjoy some peace and quiet while flying.

Breastfeed if you can, as it will make feeding and traveling easy. Breastfeeding may be easier for you, but if not try to plan your trips around places with good breast milk or formula accommodations. Airplanes usually have a special fridge in the galley where they will keep it chilled and warmed up at any time of day!

It is a well-known fact that babies are calmer when they’re worn. They also have fewer tantrums and can be maneuvered more easily through crowds in comparison to being pushed around by a stroller. So ditch the stroller and wear your baby instead.

Kids love to fly! As much as you want them with their heads in your lap, there are moments when they need a little space. Reserve an airplane bassinet for babies and toddlers so that everyone can have some peace on the plane ride home.

In order to ensure that traveling with babies is as easy on everyone involved, make sure to pack some comfy fleece pajamas, so they can sleep comfortably under their blankets while being buckled into their seats. Pack an extra set or two of clothing- it’s always better to be safe than sorry when bringing infants along!

It’s common courtesy to be good to fellow travelers. One mom has taken the time and effort so that she can apologize for her baby who likes yelling while on a plane or other public place by making signs ahead of time with “I’m sorry!” on one side, and a cute drawing of herself holding up an apologetic sign with words like “shhh” written out in large print, as well as drawings of animals such as monkeys covering their ears.

With a little preparation, you can enjoy the trip with your baby and minimize stress. The following are some of the items that I recommend having in your travel bag for babies! Don’t forget these essentials when traveling with a baby so you both can experience this new adventure together!
